Group Therapy Helper
Where would I volunteer?
As a group therapy helper you could be placed in a hospital inpatient department, outpatients’ clinics or in a hospice.
The areas in which you can volunteer include:
- dietetics
- complementary therapies
- hospice day therapy groups
- music therapy
- art therapy
- occupational therapy
- counselling.
What would I be doing?
You may have a particular skill that you can bring to a group therapy session, such as the ability to play a musical instrument and teach others how to play. Alternatively, your work may focus on providing general support to the therapist running the session.
Your general duties may include:
- meeting and greeting patients and showing them around the clinic or centre
- talking to patients to offer them reassurance during sessions
- passing on any patient concerns or issues to session staff
- general administrative and clerical work
- producing publicity material and information packs
- making sure equipment is available for the sessions.
What skills would I need?
To be a group therapy helper you should:
- enjoy helping people
- have good communication skills
- be able to follow instructions
- demonstrate patience
- have an understanding of people’s differing needs.
